Complete Mortal Shell 2 walkthrough covering the prologue, Marrow Keep, Widow's Overlook, Mushroom Village, the poison swamp, and boss fights like Magdalena, plus the retail progression route.

This Mortal Shell 2 walkthrough covers the essential path through the open beta and early retail game: the prologue, Marrow Keep, Widow’s Overlook, Mushroom Village, the poison swamp, and the final beta bosses. It also outlines the recommended retail progression route and the best map tools for players chasing 100% completion.

Mortal Shell 2 Walkthrough Overview

Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel that keeps the original’s grotesque, dark fantasy tone and Souls-like gameplay. The early hours are a mix of tight linear dungeons and an open-ended zone, all centered around the Marrow Keep hub. This walkthrough follows the critical path but calls out optional Beacons, weapons, and Shells so you don’t miss important upgrades.

For launch details or a critical take, see the Mortal Shell 2 Release Date or Mortal Shell 2 Review pages. For now, let’s get you through the prologue.

Prologue: Harros, Village Outskirts, and the Tar Golem

The prologue is fairly linear, with optional paths that loop back into the main route. You start by claiming Harros, the Vassal, your first Shell, then move through the Village Outskirts. Two Beacons are available here; cleansing them is optional, but it gives you XP and Ova that you can use once you reach Marrow Keep.

You can actually rush past most enemies in the village because XP is only awarded after you enter Marrow Keep. Try to clear enemies in Widow’s Overlook and beyond instead, where the XP will stick.

  1. Acquire Harros, the Vassal, in the opening area.
  2. Travel through Village Outskirts and cleanse the two Beacons if you want bonus XP and Ova.
  3. Enter Disciple’s Grotto, a short linear dungeon.
  4. Reach the outer part of the Grotto and watch the cutscene introducing the Tar Golem.
  5. Fight the Tar Golem, or simply die to it, to continue the story.
  6. Leave the Grotto to reach Marrow Keep.

Note: The Tar Golem fight is a scripted loss, so don’t burn too many resources trying to win. Whether you die or beat it, Harros ends up dead and you’ll be sent to Marrow Keep without a Shell.

Marrow Keep: Hub, Upgrades, and Fast Travel

Marrow Keep functions as Mortal Shell 2’s central hub, similar to Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls. Here you can Siphon rewards from Ova, upgrade weapons at the Tarforge, and learn where to go next.

  1. Talk to Zhirelle to learn about Tiel, the only other Shell available in the open beta.
  2. Explore Marrow Keep and find Franz, the Forgesmith, in the chamber to the left of the Beacon.
  3. Use the Tarforge to upgrade your weapon before heading into the wilds.
  4. Deposit Ova, then take the lift in the central chamber to the top of Marrow Keep.
  5. Use the top of Marrow Keep to fast travel to any activated Beacons.

Widow’s Overlook and Mushroom Village

Widow’s Overlook is the first major open-ended zone. The Great Arbiter of Flesh, an optional boss, waits at the start, but the main path is the route directly in front of you. That path leads into Mushroom Village, where you’ll face new enemies and witches.

  1. At the entrance to Widow’s Overlook, skip or delay the Great Arbiter of Flesh.
  2. Take the path ahead to Mushroom Village.
  3. Cleanse the Beacon at the village center to make travel easier.
  4. Head northeast to find Tiel, the Shell you’ll use for the rest of the open beta.
  5. Clear the enemy ambush in the southern village to get the Mushroom Village Key.
  6. Use the key on the locked door in Hunter’s Outlook to find the Axe and Dagger weapon.

Tip: The Axe and Dagger is well worth collecting. It offers strong damage and pairs nicely with Tiel’s ability and ranged attacks in the boss fights ahead. Check the Mortal Shell 2 Weapons page for more details.

Poison Swamp, Sunken Village, and the Final Beta Bosses

From Mushroom Village, head north into the swamp. It’s the most dangerous stretch of the open beta because large groups of enemies can Poison you, but most can be avoided by sprinting past. At the very least, cleanse the two Beacons in the area, including the Sunken Village Beacon that leads to the final boss.

Before Magdalena, you’ll fight the Wandering Shepherd mini-boss. Tiel’s Shell ability can carry this fight: use it twice in a row with upgraded abilities and the Axe and Dagger to remove about half of the boss’s HP. When the ability gauge empties, maintain distance and kill the sheep that crowd you; each kill refills the gauge and lets you use the ability again.

Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods, is the open beta’s hardest fight. Don’t charge at her from the start. Let Magdalena come to you, then either Harden to counter her attack or dodge at the right moment to trigger Tiel’s passive i-frames. Punish her recovery windows and keep your distance between exchanges.

Warning: Poison builds up fast in the swamp. If you’re struggling with the enemy density, sprint past the trash mobs and only stop for Beacons or the boss door.

Retail Progression Route

The open beta path ends with Magdalena, but the retail build continues much further. A recommended progression route avoids unnecessary backtracking: move from Marrow Keep through Fainweald, Blackridge, Nochte, and finally into the Ruins of Mammon.

OrderArea
1Marrow Keep
2Fainweald
3Blackridge
4Nochte
5Ruins of Mammon

This order avoids unnecessary backtracking, but you can revisit earlier areas with new abilities or gear if you want to clean up chests, Beacons, and upgrade materials.

Maps and Completion Tools

Going for 100% in Mortal Shell 2 is tough. The community has put together an interactive map for Fallgrim that marks Points of Interest, gear, items, upgrade materials, enemies, and secrets. It also covers interiors with guides and screenshots, which is especially useful because dungeon maps don’t exist in-game.

Note: The interactive map supports community suggestions, so if you find a marker that’s missing, you can add it to help other players.
